Australia could not save the 5 match ODI series against South Africa as they were put down to a 3-1 defeat after Gibbs (110) led South Africa to a 61 runs victory in the fourth match of the series. After Gibbs made the foundation with his 21st ton it was Steyn who curbed the chances of the Aussies to remain alive in the series. In reply to the target of 318 set by the hosts, the fight for survival by the visitors ended in the 46th over with 256 runs on the scoreboard. The series win also earned RSA the top spot in ODI ranking which they were holding prior to the commencement of the series.

With the retirement of some of the best known names in international cricket from the Australian team in the recent past, Ricky Ponting is the only remaining member of the old guard and the Aussie team now bears a very different look from a couple of years ago. There are many young, inexperienced new players in the team which is currently in a state of flux.
