The purists of the game of cricket must be the most perplexed lot. They would not know how to react, till the time test cricket only represented the game of cricket, its frontiers were not expanding. But as the age of instant nirvana in the form of Twenty-20 cricket is expanding, the countries, which used to cock a nook at cricket, seem to be warming up to it. It is probably more to do with the fact that Twenty-20 cricket has become one of the biggest commercial success stories in the recent times, and as a result new converts are getting added to the list.

One hears about talented cricket players that emerge from small towns and villages of India; in fact this has been an increasing trend in the past few years which is encouraging cricket news. At least part of this success in gleaning raw talent from the hinterland can be attributed to the BCCI’s Talent Resource Development Wing which was set up in 2002. Now a spirit of glasnost seems to have been injected and the Aussies are allowed to travel with their spouses.

Who would have imagined that a cricket match could be played at the top of the world, i.e. in the Himalayas? But if the fans and the aficionados have the inclination they can play it anywhere. India at least as a country has this ability, and the amount of the passion that the gully cricket on weekends and holidays draws, is a part of many a folklore and numerous advertisement campaigns as well. So, the final frontier or the Himalayas was chosen as the ground to play the cricket match, and it again was of the 20-20 types. Lalit Modi, the Commissioner of the Indian Premier League, must be happy at this development.
