It indeed is an ironic observation that while world over World Labour Day is celebrated in one form or the other, even for the tokenism sake, in cricket, where the component of labor is still quite pronounced, contribution of the labour to the cause of the game is not given any recognition in any form. The irony becomes more so exacerbated when one finds that while the Indian Premier League has given a certain amount for promoting the cause of education in South Africa, it has not turned its attention to the labor in its own backward and to award it in one form or the other for the selfless contribution to the cause of the game.

As many of us know by now, the BCCI has chosen to show its ‘magnanimity’ by permitting back into its fold the cricket players who were associated with the rebel Indian Cricket League. This could in a sense spell doom and gloom for the ICL because there is likely to be a mass departure of players from the troubled cricket league which is already struggling with economic difficulties. The ICL; however is maintaining a brave face and a representative were reported in the cricket news as saying they were confident of being able to retain the players that they want.

According to cricket news reports, the BCCI has relented in the case of those banned from playing any kind of official cricket by virtue of their association with the ‘rebel’ cricket league, the ICL (Indian Cricket League). The BCCI has granted ‘amnesty’ to the players till 31 May 2009, by when they will have to sever all ties with the ICL whereupon they will be permitted to play domestic cricket. International cricket however will have to wait one more year. New Zealand is ready to waive the one year waiting period and the PCB is going to consider each player on a case to case basis.
